I have used VMWare Player in Linux for more years than I care to remember, but I have no requirement beyond 2D graphics, all software uses USB 1 & 2 "passthrough". This mode might be more suitable for your needs, though it's not for the faint hearted It's 27 pages long and probably includes Mint 19.1 now - or a new thread has been started. "KVM VGA passthrough tutorial for Linux Mint 18, 18.1, 18.2, 18.3 - release 3.9" There is a long running, vast thread about KVM and VGA passthrough running in this forum. You mention USB2.0 so I think you have must have the VMWare Tools installed, if not they are essential for at least the screen resolution instability you mention There is a wealth of stored solutions to be searched there - also there are many VMWare solutions on Stack Overflow and Ask Ubuntu. It seems to support your needs, so you might be better off raising your specific queries in the VMWare Communities. Have a look at the VMWare Workstation Player Tech Specs here.
